SMART STREETS
The Hoàn Kiếm Cultural Map has been developed as part of the Hoàn Kiếm Ward pilot project for “Smart Streets” along the Hàng Đào - Hàng Ngang - Hàng Đường - Đồng Xuân - Hàng Giấy axis. Harnessing digital technology, the map serves residents and visitors alike, seamlessly blending urban amenities with the preservation and promotion of Hanoi’s Old Quarter heritage.
The five streets are presented as a continuous heritage landscape, forged from the deep interconnection between traditional crafts, commerce, spiritual beliefs and community life. Hàng Đào is historically linked to dyeing and silk; Hàng Ngang to thriving merchant communities; Hàng Đường to the trade in sugar, molasses and confectionery; Đồng Xuân to its iconic central market; and Hàng Giấy to the paper trade, bookstores and former ả đào (ceremonial singing) venues. Street names and historical records evoke the narrative of villagers who migrated from craft-production centres to settle in the capital, thereby shaping a vibrant urban existence.
Within this dynamic space, the Đồng Lạc, Hoa Lộc Thị and Đức Môn communal houses, alongside the Cầu Đông Temple, preserve local faiths, occupational heritage and strong communal bonds. No. 48 Hàng Ngang Memorial House marks the historic site where President Hồ Chí Minh drafted the Declaration of Independence in 1945. Meanwhile, Đồng Xuân Market and the bas-relief “Hanoi - Winter 1946” bridge the area's commercial vitality with memories of the courageous resistance to defend the capital. From communal houses and temples to memorial sites and public artworks, both traditional and modern heritage collectively underscore the historical depth of this urban thoroughfare. Sacred spaces and everyday routines exist side by side amidst shops, traditional houses and residential quarters.
QR codes provide instant access to on-site information, whilst the interactive map enables users to orient themselves, select destinations and explore the entire route with ease. Audio guides allow visitors to listen to captivating heritage narratives as they observe their surroundings. Available in four languages - Vietnamese, English, French and Chinese - the map broadens accessibility for both domestic and international audiences. Furthermore, the “Today” and “Then” modes allow users to contrast the contemporary map with historical cartography, identifying surviving traces of the past and tracking the evolution of the urban landscape.
Following its pilot phase, the map will progressively incorporate socio-economic data covering local businesses, services, signature products and digital utilities. Designed to connect heritage exploration with the practical needs of residents and visitors, this technological initiative contributes to safeguarding the identity of the Old Quarter whilst encouraging active community engagement in promoting its heritage value.
The Cultural Map is a collaborative project jointly implemented by the People’s Committee of Hoàn Kiếm Ward, the Management Board of Hoàn Kiếm Lake and Hanoi Old Quarter, the Institute for the Preservation and Development of Traditional Culture, and a dedicated project team: Dr Nguyễn Thị Hiệp (Expertise France), Phạm Đức Hoà (Engineer), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Trần Thị An, Dr. Đỗ Trần Phương, Dr. Lou Vargas, Tạ Tuấn Hưng (M.A.), Nguyễn Văn Học (B.A.), Hoàng Thị Nhuỵ (B.A.) and photographer Đào Tuấn Huy.
